Subject: Looking for clarification: B450M Steel Legend

Hello, hoping someone can help point me in the right direction. I am putting together my first build in over 8yrs and I decided to try an AMD build. I put together the following build using PCpartpicker:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/PJCL6s

AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-core - CPU
ASRock B450M Steel Legend Micro ATX AM4 - MB
G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200 - MEM
Zotac Geforce GTX 1660 6GB - GPU
EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W - PSU

When putting this build together I kept getting a boot loop (lights and fans turn on for 15 seconds plus or minus over and over). I did all the basic build steps to fix a loop (moved memory around, reset Cmos, disassembled and reassembled build..etc). I even tried to use a Motherboard speaker but it appears this board doesn't have a hookup for them.

So at a complete loss, I went on to ASRock's support page and found that ASRock B450 Steel Legend is more finicky with parts than pcpartpicker lets on. You have to buy specific model numbers for compatability. Even though PCpartpicker says my G-skill memory is compatible, looking at the following list of compatible memory that is not the case.

https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B450%20Steel%20Legend/index.asp#MemoryPR

So I went out and bought new memory: DD4 Corsair 2400 16GB CMK32GX4M2A2400C14      SS 2/4

Plugged these bad boys in and I got the same loop, just a more expensive loop...

Perplexed, I now went to look to see if my CPU is the issue. My CPU's part number is YD2600BBAFBBOX and it is not listed. The listed part number for a Ryzen 5 2600 is (YD2600BBM6IAF). :(

https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B450%20Steel%20Legend/index.asp#CPU

So this is the point I am reaching out for help on the forums.
1) Am I correct with these part numbers that they are incompatible and PC Part Picker is incorrect in saying they are compatible?
2) If my CPU and MB are in fact incompatible, what would my most inexpensive way forward be? A new CPU or MB with the current parts I have? Recommendations on maybe a new board without so many restrictions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I assume the HDD and the flash drive are being plugged into the same USB port on the case? Do you have any other devices plugged into any other USB ports on the case?

Oh nice good to see that it's stable with bios 3.60. I might just go ahead and buy a 3700x but will wait a bit longer and keep an eye on this forum.

ninja nerf at that.

You simply cant trust any company these days, down clocking a cpu after launch, seems like blatant false advertising to me..

what's wrong with the Asrock AGESA versions or am I missing something?
AB350M Pro4
bios 4.90 => AGESA 1.0.0.4
bios 5.00 => AGESA 1.0.0.5
bios 5.50 => AGESA 1.0.0.6 ... ok, upgrade.
bios 5.80 => AGESA 0.0.7.2 ... what?
bios 5.90 => AGESA 1.0.0.1 ??
bios 6.00 => AGESA 1.0.0.3 ... so bios 6.00 has older AGESA than bios 4.90 from 2018?

Anyway, running old Ryzen 1700. Do I even need or should update BIOS to 5.90 from 5.80? (6.00 has warning for pre Zen2 stuff)

Hi, I recently found a way to make more stable the booting process with this mobo when using with the new Zen 2 Ryzen 3XXX CPUs.
This is my current hardware parts
MoBo: ASRock Fatal1ty X470 Gaming-ITX/ac (P3.50 BIOS)
CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X
Memory: HyperX Predator Black 32GB Kit 3600MHz DDR4 CL17 (HX436C17PB3K2/32) (Samsung B-Die)

I noticed that with this memory, by just clearing CMOS and using default values, the MoBo boot loops like 20 times, before booting using the JEDEC 2400 Mhz memory speed.
If I configured the valued manually in the OC Tweaker\DRAM Frequency page the boot loops reduce to 5-8 times before actually booting.

I bough this board last year, along with the memory, and I was using it with a Ryzen 5 3400GE APU (Reven Ridge) and it booted fine, I was able to overclock the memory using the DRAM Calculator for Ryzen by 1usmus.
Thinking a lot about it, I came with the idea that maybe the memory training process was having a hard time with the new CPU, so I decided to use the fixed values in the calculator and entering in the mobo UEFI configuration in the hope that these could help with the memory training process in the board with the new CPU.
Well, that helped a lot, now the board restart normal, inside Windows the reboot process works without getting stuck in boot loop during POST. And the initial boot, sometimes it boot flawlessly, other times it boot loop 1-2 times and the it POST, I can live with that. I didn't like the idea to spent another $150-200 for a new X570 just to use this new CPU.

I must noticed, that I didn't use the OC Tweaker\DRAM Timing Configuration page, I entered most of the values in the Advanced\AMD CBS pages.
I uploaded two screenshot and marked the pages where the values can be entered in the UEFI firmware with these board.

Notice: Most of the values on these pages are selectable from a predefined set of values, the ones that you enter manually are on hexadecimal notation, so if the calculator says 53 you must enter 35 on the UEFI.
Also, the OC Tweaker\DRAM Voltage cannot be fine tuned, you just select from a predefined set of values that increments in 0.05V each one. In my case I used a DRAM frequency that worked with a value less or equal to the voltage advertised in the kit specs for the XMP profiles rated on it, in my case it was 1.35V.
The kit can be overclocked further, but it required more volts for the DRAM, and honestly, I just wanna that this board booted fine, I was not competing for a memory overclock record.
I tried 3200Mhz, however it required the next step value in volts that this board can accept that is 1.40V to be stable, the calculator said that 1.35-1.36V could work, but with 1.35V it was unstable inside Windows, and 1.36V cannot be set, the next value available inside UEFI config setting is 1.40V, so I sticked with 3133Mhz.
Hope it helps others, since ASRock doesn't give a $%$@ about us the customers and our problems with this MoBo, I will NOT buy again an ASRock product, worst experience with a product in my last 20 years building my own computers. It's a shame that we have to recur to third party tools and use a "Try & Error" approach to make their products work, and the manufacturer just sits there doing nothing when clearly there's a problem with the junk they are selling.

AGESA Combo-AM4 0.0.7.2 was also used for Athlon 2xxGE series APU.

@deemon: bios 5.50 should be the best for an old Ryzen 1700.

Hi,

I updated my X470 Mobo from 1.4 to 1.9 then to 3.3 per instructions on Asrock website. Before I update the BIOs I also updated the driver packages as instructed. The update was done with Ryzen 3 1200. Windows 10 was loaded and BIOs updated to 3.3. After I switch to Ryzen 5 3600, the computer will not boot to even BIOs options screen, the power is on and off in a loop every 10 seconds. Please help to resolve this issue. Thanks

Not specifically related to this bios update, I have had a similar issue (10 second reboot loop) in the past, and found it was my motherboard was grounding out on something. Maybe something got bumped during Ryzen 3K install and it is contacting the case in a way it wasn't before? Remove motherboard from case and see if it boots then? Just an idea. I can see how that is frustrating.

Hi I found my problem with my X470 Master SLi/AC mobo with Ryzen 3600. I hope the following details will help someone.
I followed all the BIOs update instructions from Asrock website, and I am in Bios 3.5. What I made the mistake was that I was getting sloppy swapping between Ryzen 1200 and 3600 to do the updates. The Thermo paste was overflowing and shorting some of the 3600 pins. After I clean it, and I was able to boot to Bio screen. However, I notice the booting sequence stuck at the Bios options screen. Then, I have to press "f6" to force it to boot from my M.2 drive. It seems to happen whenever I made any changes to the bios setting. Now, it is stable and boots to windows every time.

One thing I notice is that my Rams are running at 2666mhz instead of 3000Mhz. I still need to do more researching on this topic. If anyone knows the fix, please let me know.

Thanks

I admit I'm a novice, so all help is appreciated.

For building the computer, is it better to first assemble everything to the motherboard (X570 Phantom Gaming X) and then install, or is it better to install the motherboard right out of the box into the computer case (Lian Li 011 Razer) and then install the rest of the items?

I'm thinking I'd set the case on the side, install the motherboard, and then start installing everything else. It seemed that long ago with a computer I built that the motherboard tray came out of the case, but it doesn't seem to be removable now with this Lian Li case.

Did you update to this version?

Does the LAN Port LED show anything whin you plug in the cable?

In the bios, there should be an entry for enabling/disabling the ethernet controller.
Check the following things (don't know if all are available in your bios):

Advanced\AMD CBS\FCH Common Options\XGBE Configuration Options
Advanced\AMD CBS\Soc miscellaneous
Advanced\AMD CBS\Chipset Common Options

This worked for me sort of... I did this found the adapter and then put the rest of my drives and memory and the system would not boot. Spent a bunch of time and finally just returned the board. Switched for another board (and different manufacturer - but i have had good luck with ASRock in the past). Had the system up and running and software reinstalled in less then 5 hours. If you have this issue, I would suggest you change the board, it will save you a lot of headaches.
