AMD Motherboards : X470D4U with PCIe GPU

As soon as I add a graphics card to the X470D4U it is automatically selected as "primary video adaptor" and the remote KVM no longer gets a signal. The option is in the BIOS under "AMD PBS", but it can not be selected or changed.

It looks like aspeed BMC GPU is automatically disabled.

Does anyone know a way to bring it back and set it as primary?

Other mainboards allow to select the primary graphics in this case so the remote kvm is still usable and the OS can handle both (or all) graphics cards.

Without the KVM I could have bought a much cheaper board.

I've been using it with a Radeon Pro WX 4100 GPU in the small PCIe 3.0 x4 slot.

Go to BIOS -> Advanced -> Chipset and change the Onboard VGA setting from Auto to Enabled, this way at least the dGPU won't disable the onboard VGA.

If this doesn't help you might also try chsnging the boot mode to UEFI only with CSM disabled, if possible. Changing these two options lets me use both GPUs, at least in Windows 10, don't know about other operating systems.

I quite like the X470D4U's theoretical hardware capabilities but the BIOS and BMC software state is unfortunately a mess (compare large Level1Techs thread where various X470D4U users help each other out since ASRock Rack's support is a "little bit" "understaffed" regarding this motherboard model)

Thank you very much. Must have missed that option. Will try it when I get home.

Hope that the options mentioned are going to help you!

But it doesn't solve the issue that the user cannot change the greyed-out setting specifying what GPU should be used as the primary output device :(

Level1Techs is a rather niche tech YouTube channel that recently assisted Gamer's Nexus (another YouTube channel) with the build of a NAS with the ASRock Rack X470D4U2-2T (the same as the X40D4U but with dual 10 GbE onboard):

Hi,

I just put together a PC with a B450M Pro 4 board in it. Build is:

Ryzen 5 2600X, 16Gb Corsair LPX RAM, Be Quiet 11 600W supply, ASRock RX550 Radeon, Corsair S400 case.

It doesn't always power up first time. If I hit the power button the power LED comes on and the fans spin but nothing happens. If I hit the power button to turn it off and go through this cycle 3-4 times it comes up fine. The build is otherwise stable and passes memtest86 24 hour cycle and several hours of transcoding. BIOS is 3.50 as recommended.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this I'd appreciate it. It's not end of the world but slightly disconcerting!

Hi,

I have a problem with downclocking/undervolting my Threadripper 1950x. If I set the core clock in BIOS manually to 3.40 Ghz or below, once I boot into Window the CPU behaves as if everything is on Auto - the CPU boosts up to 4.10 Ghz. The core voltage is also anywhere between 1.10V and 1.50V so it looks like it's on Auto too even though I've set a Manual value of 1.00 in BIOS. After rebooting back into BIOS, the values are still set to Manual 3400 and Manual 1.00V core voltage. Really strange.

Any ideas why does this happen and how to avoid it? I want to be able to fix my CPU to 3.40 Ghz at all times and also set manual CPU core voltage at this clock speed of 1.0-1.05V.

My motherboard is X399 Taichi with the latest BIOS as of now. OS is Windows 10 x64 Pro version 1903.

Thanks in advance!

Remember, this is dual ranked RAM with a higher electrical load compared to single ranked and you have a 2600 CPU which is designed for max. 2933 MHz RAM clock.

Well this exact ram reaches 3200Mhz with this exact same CPU on other boards, even ITX from other manufacturers. In this board it cannot reach 3200 even with tCL 20 and other timings extra loose.

I think this board is broken with dual rank ram, don't know if electrically or BIOS related.

If somebody from AsRock is reading this please can you check and confirm?

I'm running this pc specs:
CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 (summit ridge)
Mobo: Asrock b350 fatality k4 gaming

Was wondering was the best bios for this b350 motherboard + ryzen 5 1600? Like in terms of performance, not crazy voltage spikes, also I would love to understand why isn't there in the bios options the spread-spectrum for users with cpu Summit-ridge, I saw there is only on the 5.70 bios but these bios are for ryzen pinnacle cpu users.

Thanks in Advance.

Don't update your BIOS unless you either have a problem or you need support for
a new CPU generation. On my 1600x system I updated to every single BIOS version
as they came out and none of them significantly impacted performance or
overclocking results. The only time a BIOS update will provide a significant
performance boost is if there was a bug in the BIOS that hampered performance
on a new generation of CPU. Every time you update your BIOS there is a slight
risk of bricking your board, that risk grows if you don't follow instructions
or have a power outage etc. I update frequently on my test systems so I can
help users on the forums here, my main system has been updated only once since
I built it and only because the update improved memory support and allowed me
to run my RAM at it's rated speed.

Are you using windows 10?
If yes, maybe the fast startup option is a problem (i had that problem after a windows update)

Please follow the steps as below to uncheck the "Turn on fast startup" under windows.

Step 1. Open the Power Option item in control panel.
Step 2. Click the Choose what the power button do link.
Step 3. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
Step 4. Clear the Turn on fast startup (recommend) check box.
Step 5. Click Save changes.

Hi,

I've been trying to setup my disks with raid but run into a problem. I have 2 identical hitachi 500gb HDDs, and one Kingston 250gb SSD.
I've enabled raid into storage options, and created new raid array with the 2 hitachi, saved settings but in the boot options I cannot see my SSD disk which already has an operating system. I played with the SCM settings also but it did not do any good. Anyone has any idea how to setup this 3rd disk to boot.

Thanks.

I will include exact MB and firmware in my next post (need to restart).

MB is X470 Gaming K4 P3.50

Now I see when I enable the raid option that the ssd disk is listed as legacy, but when I select the scm option legacy only I cannot see the raid setup menu.

Probably I need to format the SSD from and it will appear in the boot list. I really didn't wanted to do this. Is this the only option?

My son exactly this MB, but Ryzen 2400G. He virtalized a lot of OS, including macosx, BUT under Linux, w/ and w/o graphics card passthrough.
So from HW perspective it must work and issue is likely with Windows virtalization solution.

Thanks again

And how could you reformat it when it is not recognised?
In another machine or what?

I was lucky to have old SATA HDD which I installed Windows to and then formatted M.2 SSD using Disk Management.

Since then my M.2 SSD still gets intermittently unrecognised in BIOS but usually loads Windows fine. I bet all these issues are ASRock BIOS related.

Still haven't heard from their support. 11 days waiting now. And still no official BIOS release. Forcing customers to look for beta BIOS updates on their own. Useless bunch.

ASRock says the only OS they support is Windows 10 for this board. They don't even do that though. I submitted a ticket weeks ago and they never responded. This is maddening b/c this is for a family member. I'm done with ASRock.
